It was a fabulous animal described as a horse with a long sharp horn on his forehead, a goat beard, a lion's tail, hairy legs and cattle hooves. It appears in heraldry and in medieval legends as a symbol of chastity. It was introduced amongst the constellations in 1690 by the astronomer J. Hevel, a native of Gdansk. The constellation is also known by the name of Monoceros , and borders on Orion, the Big Dog, the Little Dog, the Ship, the Hare and Hydra. It has very bright stars and is crossed by a particularly bright region of the Milky Way.
