Argo Navis

The constellation designed by Flamsteed is dedicated to the ship named Argo, which means "Fast" - built by Argus, son of Phrixus - which carried Jason and his companions to Colchis. It was introduced by Ptolemy (Almagest, II century AD), but was afterwards subdivided by N.-L. Lacaille into four separate constellations: Carina "keel" Puppis "bow" Sail and Pyxis "compass". The new constellation Carina contains the star Canopus, second only to Sirius in brightness.
