Riding the wave

The caryatids are the counterpart on the stern of the figurehead. Just as figureheads, their goal is not only to represent the magnitude of the ship owner - in this case, a Genoese galley of the eighteenth century - but also to inspire fear, along with the multitude of ornaments and statues that adorn the boat, giving a strong image of the military power of the owner.
